That's really strange cause my 2000 does the same, exact thing! It'll got a few months without doing it, then I have to pull over cause the headlights are flickering. It's so random that I haven't looked into what it is.

Just bought the headlight switch at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $98 + tax. Good for me, they only had the police version in stock.

Update: Found the headlight switch on Amazon for only $80. It was OEM Motorcraft so I took that one back to Motorcraft and got almost $20 back! But it didn't fix the problem. Got the new switch installed (easier than I thought it'd be) and the lights are still cutting off randomly. This last time I could have sworn I smelled something burning too.

Any ideas?

This problem is getting worse. Something is overheating but I can't figure out what it is. Now the lights (all of them; headlights, dash, interior) cut off with a loud click and then won't come back on for about 30 seconds.

Anyone else?

Sounds like the relay is going bad. The relay can overheat and get stuck in position. Leaving the lights off allows the relay to cool and reset.
